LET THE RIGHT ONE IN

Vampire movies.  We keep watching them and by and large they never cease to disappoint on some level.  I can't think of a single film about a vampire that serviced for anything more than a visceral or campy entertainment.  And don't go giving me a diatribe about Anne Rice and Interview.  Some undead homoerotic fantasy really doesn't do it for me.  Now I'm not complaining, mind you.  I enjoy a vampire flick if its fun and entertaining but they don't ever possess any depth.

Let The Right One In is a story that follows a twelve year old boy Oskar and his twelve year old girlfriend who happens to be a vampire.  My first thought when she moved in next door was it would be a new Fright Night with preadolescents.  I could have been more wrong but it would have been hard.

This is not a typical horror film.  It plays as a drama as we watch a tender and innocent romance develop between the two children.  But when Eli decides its time to Vamp out I couldn't stop from going Holy Shit!, every time.

Think Terry Gilliam's Tideland and William Friedkin's Exorcist with a little bit of Ingmar Bergman thrown in and you'll get a good idea of how this film plays out.  It is slowly paced and I will admit that at times I was wishing that it  would pick up.  However when it did finally end I was disappointed that I no longer could view the lives of the main characters.

While it doesn't add anything new to the mythology of vampires it does give you a deep look into what it means to be one.

If I were less lazy I would redo my top one hundred and put this somewhere near the
