VOICES

Okay any synopsis of this film I try and give you will fall a little short.  Basically you are lead to believe that this young woman is cursed and her family and friends are trying to kill her.  But that doesn't really do justice to this twisting, layered mystery.

This is the Japanese entry into this years batch of After Dark Horrorfest.  Now entering its third year it has unleashed some atrocious shit that would challenge even bridewars for the honor of worst of the worst.  So far from the movies in this series that I have watched I've found three that are worth the time. The Abandoned, Borderlands and now this one.

J horror has suffered greatly from the style over substance virus and at first glance this would have seemed to be the case here.  It leads you all over the place giving minimal clues to what is going on, actually adding to the tension by completely befuddling you.  Just when you think its over and you are getting pissed off at the lack of cohesion you are being offered Boom!  They nail you with an ending that comes way out of left field.  But I myself felt vindicated for sitting through it all and was more than satisfied.

With the exception of Audition, the J horror bar seemed set rather low.  Well its been raised now and I hope that the other filmmakers on that island take notice.  If not I'll go back to watching old Godzilla movies.
