THERE WILL BE
BLOODI was initially very excited to watch this when a friend loaned it to me. Daniel Day Lewis is by far one of the best actors working in film today. I imagine it is a writer’s wet dream to have an actor of his caliber bring life to a character he/she created. I know if someone were to read any thing I wrote and told me that Daniel Day Lewis was interested in playing any character I would ejaculate with glee. The premise of the film as was summarized on the box was about an oil man in the late 19th early 20th centuries and a battle with a local minister. This further intrigued me as I could not think of why such a war would take place and in what fashion this war would be raged. As the film was rated R, plus taking into account the film’s title I could only assume that some bloodletting was about to occur. So armed with some heart stopping sub from Subway and a lukewarm soda I plop my ass onto the couch to enjoy. When the film was over I wasn’t hungry at least, and also grateful that I didn’t pay to watch it. Here is why: First, I can only assume the film was rated R because the producer paid off the MPAA so that critics would take it seriously. It contained a total of six swear words and very little blood. What it was, was a character piece following Daniel Day Lewis’s character from his beginnings to his ending. From the start you found out that the character was strong willed and success driven. In about fifteen more minutes you find out that he is an asshole. And as you explore the world he lives in with him you discover that everyone else is also an asshole or an ass kissing sycophant leaving me no one to root for or really sympathize with. So here I am watching a movie about people I don’t care about. Now to top that off the promised feud with the preacher, who is also an asshole fleecing his flock with a dog and pony faith healing show, amounts to little more than a couple skirmishes and the film moves on to other people that the main character wishes to crush. The ending is about the culmination of that ‘war’, which you have all but forgotten about by the time it comes. My biggest complaint had to be that as a character piece we never see any growth. The characters are assholes and stay that way. They never change and we are never really presented with anything that would make them want to. The acting is phenomenal and the cinema photography is at times breath taking and if that is enough for you then by all means watch this movie. But if you are like me and want a little development of character and maybe a story that actually goes somewhere then avoid this. I can only assume that the critics that loved it read something into it to make it palatable but I was just plain bored. In the end I viewed it as a well made film about a story that really didn’t need telling. |
